Twelve inches of moving water can float most sedans. Once a car floats, steering and braking do nothing — the vehicle goes where the water goes.

Eighteen to twenty-four inches will carry away most SUVs and pickups. Higher ground clearance helps you wade deeper before you stall; it does not stop you from floating.

The word doing the work in all of these is moving. Standing water is a hazard. Moving water is a different category of problem, because the force scales sharply with speed. Water that looks like it is barely flowing can still push several thousand pounds sideways.

What you cannot see from the driver's seat

This is the part that makes flooded roads so much more dangerous than they look.

You cannot judge depth. Water hides the road surface entirely. A crossing that looks like it covers the pavement by a few inches may sit over a dip you cannot see.

You cannot tell if the road is still there. Fast water scours out the roadbed from underneath. Pavement can look intact and be a shell over a washout. This is a common way vehicles end up in water that appeared shallow.

You cannot see the edges. Once the shoulder is submerged, the lane markings are gone, and drifting a few feet to the side can put a wheel off the pavement into a ditch that is now a channel.

At night, none of the above is even partially visible. Headlights reflect off the surface of water and tell you nothing about what is underneath it. If you have to make this judgment in the dark, the answer is no.

What to actually do

Turn around. This is the whole answer, and it is unglamorous enough that people talk themselves out of it. The detour costs you twenty minutes. The alternative has killed people who were better drivers in better vehicles than most of us.

Do not drive around barricades. A closed road is closed because someone went and looked. Barricades also frequently mark washouts that are invisible from a distance.

Check before you leave, not while you are out. NCDOT maintains a real-time travel information service with road closures statewide. Looking at it before a trip during a storm week is worth the two minutes.

If your car stalls in rising water, get out and move to higher ground immediately. Do not stay with the vehicle. Cars are replaceable and they fill fast.

Avoid low spots you already know about. Every town has them — the underpass, the dip by the creek, the stretch that puddles in an ordinary thunderstorm. Those are the places that flood first and deepest.

The days after are still dangerous

When the rain stops, three hazards remain and all of them cause crashes:

Dark traffic signals. Power outages knock out signals for days. A dark signal is legally treated as an all-way stop in most situations, but the practical danger is the driver coming the other way who does not know that or is not paying attention. Approach slowly, expect the other person to be wrong.

Debris. Branches, gravel washed across the pavement, and standing sediment all reduce traction and appear suddenly around curves.

Downed lines. Treat every downed wire as live. Never drive over one.

The habits that carry over

Most of what makes storm driving survivable is the same set of habits that makes ordinary wet-weather driving survivable: more following distance, lower speed, headlights on, and a willingness to change the plan.
